Morning Bell: Hispanics and the 2012 Election

After last week’s Republican primary elections in Wisconsin, Maryland, and Washington, D.C., the 2012 presidential primary season is reaching an inflection point, and eyes are turning toward America’s final decision on Election Day in November. While pundits and pollsters speculate on the horse race and who will capture the hearts and minds of the American people, one segment of the electorate is garnering increased attention — Hispanic Americans. It is, to be sure, a population that continues to grow in size, voice, and importance. In the 2008 election, Hispanics turned … More

In Pictures: The Impact of Obamacare

Today is the official second anniversary of Obamacare’s signing, but there’s little to celebrate. The Heritage Foundation’s re-launched version of “Obamacare in Pictures: Visualizing the Effects of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act” shows through new charts and graphs Obamacare’s far-reaching negative effects on Americans. Here are just a few examples of what the series reveals about Obamacare: It grows dependence on government. Obamacare expands government control over health care by expanding Medicaid and creating new government exchanges. By the year 2020, more than 50 percent of Americans will … More

The 3 Biggest Ways Obamacare Kills Jobs

Obamacare’s provisions will result in significant job loss acrossAmerica. Below is a summary of how Obamacare’s provisions will harm job growth: Employer mandate. Obamacare requires all businesses with 50 or more full-time employees to provide health coverage for their workers or pay a $2,000 penalty for each employee after the first 30 workers. The employer mandate creates incentives for businesses to avoid higher costs by, for example, hiring part-time employees instead of full-time employees, since businesses will not be penalized for failing to provide health insurance to part-time employees. In addition, as … More

Illinois Primary Day: Economy Still Top Issue

It’s another day and another state in the continuing quest that is the Republican primary process as Illinois voters head to the polls. And though the scenery changes with each day — from the beaches of Hawaii to the streets of the Windy City — there is one constant in this primary election: Voters are almost singularly focused on the state of the economy. A Chicago Tribune/WGN poll shows that 38 percent of voters rated the economy as their top issue, followed by the size and power of the federal … More

Morning Bell: A Disappointing Recovery Leaves Americans Suffering

In the Super Tuesday primary, the economy was the number one issue on voters’ minds, be they in Massachusetts, Georgia, Ohio, or Virginia. And that wasn’t because they were happy about high unemployment and slow wage growth. Yet according to President Barack Obama, “the economy is getting stronger, and the recovery is speeding up.” Of course, these things are relative. A disappointing recovery is underway. It just hasn’t touched the millions of Americans who remain out of work, the millions more whose wages can’t keep up with inflation, and it … More

Cantor JOBS Bill Would Help Small Businesses Grow

In a move designed to make it easier for smaller businesses to raise money for expansion and job creation, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R–VA) has announced that he intends to package together six existing smaller bills into a bipartisan package. The combination, to be known as the Jumpstart Our Business Startups (JOBS) Act, is expected to be joined by similar legislation in the Senate. Cantor’s package provides growing small businesses with relief from a series of Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) regulations that sharply limit their ability to raise … More

Morning Bell: Press Conference Leaves Many Questions Unanswered

Yesterday, President Barack Obama ended his months-long press conference drought and faced the White House press corps. Unfortunately for the American people, questions on some of the biggest issues facing the country remain unanswered. The 100-ton elephant in the room that wasn’t discussed? The economy. Though the President would like to revel in the country’s recent spate of moderate economic growth, all is not well in America. More than 8 percent of Americans remain unemployed — nearly 13 million in total. What’s more, only 63.7 percent of adult Americans are active … More

WaPo Admitting Keynesian Stimulus Failed?

Does unprecedented deficit-spending such as on highways stimulate the economy? For the last few years, some have argued it could. Some have argued it might. Some have argued it would if done right. We have consistently argued that deficit spending on highways or anything else intended to lift aggregate demand, and therefore jobs, must and would fail. The economic evidence that we were right has now been joined by the illustrious trio of The Washington Post, the Associated Press, and the esteemed Alice Rivlin, former director of the Congressional Budget … More

Obama – For Keystone or Against It?

The Obama Administration voiced its support Monday regarding TransCanada Corporation’s plans to construct the interstate portion of the Keystone XL pipeline that does not require presidential approval. Remember that President Obama rejected TransCanada’s permit application to construct a 1,700-mile pipeline from Alberta, Canada, to Texas refineries just this January. Has the President since had a change of heart on the Keystone project? Not really. Since the 485-mile segment of the pipeline from Oklahoma to Texas can be carried out without presidential approval, the President’s endorsement is utterly meaningless. President Obama … More
