Why ObamaCare Must Go, in Ten Short Minutes

By Michael F. Cannon

Last week, I appeared on NPR’s Tell Me More program. My discussion with host Michel Martin gives a good synopsis of why ObamaCare is both harmful to consumers and unconstitutional. Listen to the segment here. For a contrary perspective, listen to former Obama administration acting solicitor general Neal Katyal, who appeared on the program the next [...]

Production of Oil, Gas and Coal on Federal Lands Sinks to Nine-Year Low

Last fall the U.S. government’s Energy Information Administration reported a 40 percent decline in oil and natural gas production on federal lands compared to 10 years ago. The White House and a prominent liberal in Congress protested. They said EIA, a trusted source for reliable energy information, was wrong. They complained that EIA hadn’t accounted for all data from the Department of Interior. EIA released an updated analysis last week. And while the number isn’t as drastic as originally reported, EIA confirmed the Obama administration is overseeing a sharp decline … More

Chart of the Week: Obama Tops Bush With More, Costlier Major Regulations

President Obama famously declared in this year’s State of the Union: “I’ve approved fewer regulations in the first three years of my presidency than my Republican predecessor did in his.” Heritage’s James Gattuso and Diane Katz have run the numbers. And Obama shouldn’t be bragging. Obama’s comparison encompassed all regulations, including federal rules for such things as Medicare rates, migratory birds and fireworks safety. And on that point, he was telling the truth. This week’s chart tests Obama’s claim by looking at the number of major regulations imposed by each administration. Major … More

Pop Quiz: 10 Questions to Test Your Knowledge on Gas Prices

Americans are upset over the rising cost of gasoline. As the national average for regular unleaded climbs to nearly $4 per gallon, President Obama’s approval rating is headed in the opposite direction. As drivers pay closer attention to the price at the pump, they’re also growing more displeased with the policies from the White House, according to new polls released this week. With little relief in sight as the summer months approach, it’s time for Washington to act. Heritage’s Nick Loris has recommended five common-sense solutions that include approving the … More

Chart of the Week: Winter Gas Prices Reach All-Time High

The cost of gasoline today is at its highest point ever during winter, an ominous sign of what might be on the horizon in the months to come. According to government data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration, the average price of regular unleaded is $3.34 over the three-month period of December, January and February. The current national average is even higher: $3.65, according to the latest figures from AAA. Last December, motorists encountered the highest-ever price for gas at Christmas in history. Today drivers in California are paying on … More

Scribecast: AEI’s Marc Thiessen on Dangers of the Obama Doctrine

President Obama’s use of drone strikes to target terrorists is depleting U.S. intelligence on al Qaeda and making America less safe in the process, according to Marc Thiessen, an American Enterprise Institute fellow. “The Obama administration has completely eliminated live capture of terrorists and bringing them in for interrogation,” Thiessen said. “As a result, we are not getting insight into the inner workings of al Qaeda.” Thiessen, author of “Courting Disaster” and a former speechwriter for President George W. Bush, spoke at Heritage about the Obama Doctrine. He joined us … More

D.C. Parents Say School Choice Gives Students a Chance at Success

“Either he doesn’t get it, or he doesn’t care,” Sheila Jackson, parent of a D.C. Opportunity Scholarship recipient, said upon hearing the news that President Obama’s budget eliminates funding for the popular program. Jackson sounded torn about which was worse. “I was appalled,” she told Scribe. The D.C. Opportunity Scholarship Program provides low-income families in one of the worst public school systems in America with vouchers to attend private schools of their choice. More than 1,600 students are benefiting this year alone. Jackson’s daughter, Shawnee, has had a scholarship since … More

Lawmakers Rally for D.C. Scholarships, Promise to Fight Obama’s Funding Cut

A bipartisan group of lawmakers today promised to defend the D.C. Opportunity Scholarship Program for low-income families following President Obama’s decision to eliminate funding in his budget. “The bipartisan, grassroots coalition responsible for keeping the Opportunity Scholarship Program alive will continue speaking out, and I’ll be standing alongside them every step of the way,” Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) said Tuesday. Boehner teamed with Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) last year to sponsor legislation to save the program. It was eventually reauthorized for five years under the bipartisan budget agreement. More than … More
